Age May Be a Number, But It’s Not A Goal

Just because the number is higher or we feel differently doesn’t mean everything has to change.

It’s been said that most people are caricatures of their former self . . . at any age.

For most of my life, I’ve not had older relatives to look up to and take ques from about how to act, dress, behave, and find out things I wanted to learn.

As a result, I’ve tried to be an excellent student of those that should, could, or would be role models.

Let me give you some examples.

  • As a business executive in the seventies, I was told I didn’t dress well enough to meet major clients or their Boards of Directors.

SOLUTION: I clipped a picture of a President of a major corporation addressing Wall Street concerns. I found clothing stores that sold that type of clothing, purchased all I needed and got a haircut.

  • As a young father, I was completely unsure of myself.

SOLUTION: I found grandfathers that had raised men I admired and arranged for some one-on-one counseling.

  • I was hired to head a casualty insurance company when I had never been in the insurance business.
