Stranded in the desert, in the middle of an ocean, or someplace where you were completely alone? What did that feel like?

They stranded me on an island in the Philippines. I don’t even think there was a name for it. Friends thought it would be a good idea to go on a picnic on this little island. They gave me the first load of food and a cooler to take to the island's far side. The view was supposed to die for.

When I reached the spot, it was obvious it was the place to enjoy the view. I was excited, and when I turned back to say something to the others, there was no one there. Slowpokes, I thought. That was until I arrived at the place we used as a landing for our rubber boat. It was then I realized they had left me on the island. The area was famous for islands almost disappearing at high tide.

I had food for several days, water, swim trunks, and a single towel. I was on the island for two days when my “friends” came back for me.

What I realized I missed the most was someone to communicate with. Someone I could share the adventure and the thrill of discovery with. After they picked me up, I wished I had spent more time looking around. The island was about 1.5 miles across.

What I learned is that I always need to have a way of communicating with others.
