Finally, there’s a .gif that does all the work for us. This would be so much easier than deciding. It would not be received well because you have to ask, “How many claps are they giving and what does it mean?” It could mean:

1 clap — Hey, I read your story

10 claps — That was a nice story; thank you

25 claps — Now that was helpful; thank you

50 claps — Great story, thanks.

Now, the CLAP has a new meaning that’s easy to remember.

I was a member of Medium for several months before I found out you could do more than two claps. I accomplished two by leaving my finger down a little too long.

Then, as is my custom, I sometimes fall asleep at the keyboard. On this particular day, I fell asleep while my finger was on the clap. When I woke up, my finger had already realized it was a great story. I had given it fifty claps. It was a great story and deserved many more claps than I thought was possible.

On this day, with this story, I would have given it one hundred claps if it had been an option.

The CLAP is very personal. What you give as a number should reflect so much more than . . . O.K. I read it. Next.

What are your thoughts?
