The Meaning Of Thanksgiving
Today, November 23, 2022
Maybe it’s time we change the name of this national holiday. Perhaps the story is so old that it’s lost its meaning.
What we will see tomorrow is a lot of Turkey. Forty-six million turkeys will be consumed tomorrow with leftovers for days. Then at Christmas, we’ll confuse everyone and eat an additional twenty-two million turkeys at Christmas. Leftovers won’t quite make it to the New Year as a snack for the games that day.
Grateful, thankful, and blessed might be better than Thanksgiving. Why? Any one of those names expresses the reason we celebrate tomorrow. So is it more important to learn about Pilgrims, Indians, and those that didn’t even want peace that day? Or should we change the name to reflect what we should be doing that day?
My wife and I never had a large family gathering on Thanksgiving. We imagine it and become a bit terrified. Can you see six grown children, four married, eighteen grandchildren, two with spouses, and four great-grandchildren all wanting to eat simultaneously?
OMG, I’m beginning to have a panic attack. But, no, it could be a full-on heart attack. Oh no, my wife just passed out.
All the humor aside, on Thanksgiving, we ask our family to remember everything they are thankful for. Isn’t a “Thankful” day better than thanksgiving?
There’s been a lot of tongue-in-cheek in this piece. I hope that whatever you call the day or do during the day, we will all remember how thankful we are for the blessings we’ve received. Let the joy of the day wash over you and refresh your soul.
