There’s A Notion That Education Doesn’t Matter

Who would say this to anyone?

Full disclosure

I didn’t go to college until I returned from the Vietnam War, and I had already started and sold one business and purchased another.

One person can make a difference

Ed Ramp was the owner of a steel company. He had become a friend. On occasion, we spoke to inner-city youth about careers. Ed took the time to give me the “college” discussion on one of those assignments.

My company was flourishing at the time. Our employees were earning more money than they had ever earned. Still, this was his pitch:

“DR, you understand networking, right?” Yes, I did. He said, “Remember what it was like to go through BootCamp with men you’d met from all over the country? Are you still in touch with them?” I said, “I am. We went through hell together. I would help anyone of them if they asked.”

Ed continued with his reasoning, “College is no different. You will have some trying moments and periods where your learning makes no sense to you.”

“It’s at that moment that you lean on a room and/or classmate to “help” you out.”
