Christmas 2019, taken by Gary Friedman, Friedman Archives.

When we were married for twenty years, we realized that her mom and dad would pass on soon. They did. Then, the weight of being nearly alone set in. She had a cousin that lived in another state, and she was older than her as well.

When we were married, Margaret (who had never had kids) became a stepmother to six kids. Of those, two were still underage. Within a year, she became a grandmother to twins.

The question became, what if I passed away? She would then be all alone, or would she? We then realized I must live longer than her because I’m 9.5 years older. This is difficult, but it is necessary.

Today, my goal is to live to be 100. This way, I’m certain I will live longer than her.
